Today, I've put together some thoughts on what we Japanese people living in the U.S. should consider, based on what I learned from my recent interview at the elderly group home " Nagomi Home ."

Retirement challenges unique to those who have emigrated abroad

I can't think of the English words

Challenges unique to international marriages

We often hear that as people get older, they become reluctant to speak English. In fact, this seems to be a fairly serious problem.
Japanese people living in the U.S. often grow old here and only speak Japanese, which makes it difficult to communicate with their American-born family members. This can cause not just inconvenience, but serious problems, and both parties feel very lonely.
Japanese senior care facilities like Nagomi Home are said to be there to support these unique challenges faced by expatriates, offering assistance such as acting as interpreters for seniors and their families.

Challenges unique to international marriages

For example, there are occasional cases where a wife develops dementia and no longer recognizes her husband, resulting in divorce from her American husband. In such cases, the complexities unique to expatriates become apparent, starting with divorce proceedings for a person with dementia, whether or not they can return to Japan, and the daily care they will have to provide.
Furthermore, there are unique American rules that can become an issue, such as whether the necessary Power of Attorney is properly assigned in advance when dementia develops. Whether or not these issues are properly understood and addressed in advance makes a huge difference in the burden on the family providing care.

Make sure you are properly prepared in case you end up staying in the United States

During this interview, I learned that some people were even prevented from flying due to doctor's orders because of their physical condition. I sometimes hear comments like, "If I become senile, I can just go back to Japan," but it seems it's not always that simple.
If you've been living in the U.S. for a long time, it seems important to do what you can while you can, with the resolve and preparation for possibly staying in America, or if you do stay.
So, where should you start with the resolve and preparation?

Elderly care facilities and community contribution

The biggest takeaway from this reporting trip was that "senior care facilities exist not only for the elderly themselves, but also for their families and the surrounding communities." I strongly encourage everyone to visit senior care facilities and services as early as possible, and to volunteer. By doing so, you can learn what happens when dementia develops in America (unlike in Japan), what is needed, and how to recognize the unique challenges faced by those in international marriages and those who have emigrated. I also hope that our efforts will raise awareness of the importance of Japanese senior care services and facilities throughout the United States, leading to their wider adoption. Recently, I volunteered to prepare lunch boxes for seniors in my hometown of San Diego. There, I witnessed the reassuring sight of elderly people volunteering to prepare lunch boxes for other seniors.

I also delivered the finished bento boxes to the rooms of elderly care facilities, and I got a glimpse inside the rooms, which gave me a great opportunity to think about what I want to do and what I can do in the future

This was my third time covering senior living facilities in the United States, and the topic that always comes up is the high cost.
Currently, it's difficult to afford unless you have insurance or a lot of money.
