Matoi/Matoi
A one-of-a-kind sushi experience where traditional Edomae sushi resonates with 90s hip-hop.
Located in the Convoy area, "Matoi" is a new kind of sushi restaurant that fuses traditional Edomae sushi techniques with the soothing rhythms of 90s hip hop
We offer authentic Edo-style sushi, primarily using seasonal fish sourced from Japan. From selecting the ingredients to preparation and shaping the sushi, we make no compromises, and each piece is infused with the craftsman's dedication
Owner-chef TJ is a highly skilled chef who has honed his skills in San Diego, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, Tijuana, and even in Japan. Drawing on his experience around the world and the techniques he learned from renowned Japanese sushi chefs, his mission is to share authentic Japanese food culture with his guests
With its refined sushi, sophisticated atmosphere, and 90s hip-hop playing in the background, this is one of the few truly special restaurants in San Diego where you can enjoy authentic Edo-style sushi without feeling intimidated
